My Weird Dog

Zeke is my Border Collie. He's also one of the strangest Dogs I've ever met. He certainly has his peculiarities. One of those is his Toys. He has the same toys he's had since he was an itty bitty pup.(he's about 4 yrs. old now. He's always taken great care of his little fuzzy friends and has never so much as put a hole in any of them. To this day he still carries them around, flips them in the air and plays catch with them. While most Dogs and pups love to tear the stuffing out of their plush toys Zeke treats each one like it is a prized possession. Weird Dog.

The Earth, Helpless against the Assault

I really get upset when the subject of coal mining comes up. I KNOW there's alot of jobs banking on it. I KNOW there's alot of money involved but what kills me to think about it is what the mining companies are allowed to do to the earth. My dad's family is from one of the many WV counties that has much mining going on.
One of the practices that I just can't believe is still happening is pumping coal slurry, (a mineral and nasty crap toxic mixture that no human should ever be exposed to that's left behind from the mining process) into the earth through means of a *CONTROLLED* program. They pump it into abandoned mines to get rid of it. They have no where else to put it, they already have 100's of slurry ponds. Some really bright idiot thought that would be a great idea. No one would ever see it again if it was underground, right? WRONG. When you pump something underground you have no idea where it's going to go and where it will surface. The people living around there know. It's coming up through their wells and seeping into their land making life there literally worthless. Their land is worthless, their water is worthless and their health has been shown and proven to be suffering for it. there's countless reports from the medical community of miscarriages, cancer and kidney failure. Because the folks around there are simple country folk it doesn't seem to matter as much or be on the top of any one's agenda.
I'm so thankful I live where I don't have to look out my window and see them digging up a mountain top or have to deal with the coal dust settling all over my house and in my lungs everyday. I don't have to hear the explosions and feel the earth shake, helpless against the assault. I'm not without my own worries here though. The loggers here are ripping up the land and I was looking across the holler ( that's hillbilly for hollow btw) just the other day and can see where they have nearly cleared one mountain top across the way. You can even see the trails from where the heavy trucks are up and down off that mountain. Nobody's minding the store so to speak and they are raping it.

little miracles

I've started seedlings inside, getting revved up for the upcoming Market season and much to my surprise and delight I have several varieties that have sprouted, after only 2 Days!! That is absolutely amazing. Only the touch of the Master's hand could do that and I'm not talking about mine. Now I'm not a religious fanatic or anything like that but I do believe in God and the Good Lord's always looked out for me and He is now so I'm giving credit where credit is due and thanks.

Speaking of Spring.....

I finally got to take the tiller out to the garden yesterday. It was wonderful! I've been dying to get in the dirt all winter. (something just seems wrong about that statement....)
anyway, I got to do a little tilling and the sun felt so good on my skin and in my bones. The warm weather birds are making their migration back and I had missed their songs so much. The smell of the fresh turned earth filled my senses and I was back in my element. I'm expanding my gardens this year and I've been anxiously waiting to get started. The ol' man says he's never met anyone that gets so excited over dirt and horse poop.
I have quite a few new flowers and herbs varieties to give a try and can't wait to see how they go over at the Markets. I always try and add things that people want but are hard to get. I'm also working on a website for my Cut Flowers, Herbs and Veggies and it should be up soon.
I have some new pet treats flavors coming out this week as well. I'll keep you updated on that in my blogs and on the Mountain Post Pet Treats website.

If you're gonna screw me.......

At least gimme a kiss!
That's what I have to say to Verizon Phone Company. I wouldn't even have a landline but unfortunately I have to have one so naturally, since I have Sooooo many phone companies I can choose from (yeah right) I went with Verizon. When I opened my account I told them "I don't use this phone for long distance so I don't need a long distance program included in my package". Ok, clear enough I thought.
So a few years go by and I start seeing these weird charges on my bill. It was labeled long distance shortfall charge. It started out just a few cents so I didn't say anything about it right away. It was one of those things that you're going to get around to but never do, yanno?. So anyway this charge keeps showing up on my bill month after month and it keeps increasing. Finally it hit the $10.00 mark and I hit the ceiling! I called them up to *discuss* it. In essense they said it's a charge that if you don't make so many long distance calls a month you have to pay.
What??!! You mean you're penalizing me for NOT making long distance phone calls? Yep that's about it. That's the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard. They did not have permission to change my account in any shape, form or fashion and I certainly did not tell them that "Yeah, please penalize me for not making long distance phone calls". It's another form of slamming.
As I've talked to other folks with Verizon they've seen the same thing pop up on their bills.
It should be ILLEGAL.

Changing Weather

Spring is on the way! All you have to do is watch for the signs in nature. The sun rises a little earlier, sets a little later. The warmer days arrive and stay around for more days. The cold, cold nights begin their temporal climb.
I don't mind the winter really, I just get tired of it and am ready to see some color added to the landscape. I'm ready to get my gardens going and break out the saddles for the horses. I'm tired of being in the house so much, I'd much rather be at the barn.
This winter has been so wet. Not much snow, we don't see as much snow as we used to but plenty of rain and the mud is everywhere. It can suck your boots off of you when you walk through the paddock. Having dogs it's tracked all through the house. Trying to keep it clean is a losing battle. We need the rain though so can't complain about that. My gardens will be better for it I'm sure.
